Introduction Brahmacharya is generally translated as celibacy but it actually means "one who is established in higher consciousness." The word Brahma means "higher reality" and achara means the follower of or "one who is established in". This higher reality is definitely not the sensual, sensorial or carnal reality. Later, brahmacharya became known as celibacy, but the original meaning of brahmacharya was to establish oneself in the awareness of higher consciousness. It is the practice of right conduct: living a life of moderation, self-control, and adherence to higher spiritual principles.
